Disadvantages and Advantages of Organic Gardening

Organic gardening has taken hold of many people in recent decades and many people believe that organic gardening is truly the way to go for their food, plants, and overall health. However, there are both disadvantages and advantages to organic gardening that need to be looked at even though many organic gardeners are partial to the gardening method that they've chosen.

As far as the advantages of organic gardening go, there are many benefits that are experienced by those who have taken on this endeavor. For them, they can enjoy overall better health. Since organic foods are grown naturally and removed naturally from the soils in the ground, many of the nutrients that the plant has stays with the plant. On the other hand, giant farming organizations that produce plants for sale in many retail stores use more pesticides than are needed, and also process the foods that are grown. The processing of these plants and foods not only reduces the nutritional value of them, but also gives an increased risk of poisoning. Furthermore, another type of processing called pasteurization also takes away much of the nutritional value of things like milk, cheeses, and other dairy product. So the main advantage of organic gardening lies in the fact that there is more nutritional value to the plants that are grown and the foods that are made with them.

When reviewing some of the other disadvantages and advantages to organic gardening, there are plenty of other advantages to growing your own food organically. For example, organic foods do stay fresh for longer periods of time and it also does not take much money for them to be grown. One of them main reasons for this, too, is because many agrichemicals are needed to be used because they're not required! In fact, many of the organic rules mandate that agrichemicals are not to be used in order for plants to be called truly organic.

There are also disadvantages of organic gardening though. Compared with industrialized gardening methods, using organic gardening methods take much more time and skill. There is also more interaction between the plants, gardens, and the organic gardener, whereas the gardener takes very little action with industrialized methods. But the amount of time it takes to grow foods industrially compared with organic methods is not the only downside. Another disadvantage to organic gardening is that these gardeners are usually not able to use genetically modified food crops. But genetically modified, or GM, food crops are able to resist pests, which is a major plus for industrialized and conventional gardens.

All in all, there are many advantages and disadvantages to organic gardening. But organic or not, a lot of it is dependent upon your preferences and choices. However, organic gardening is continuing to grow in popularity and many people have already chosen organic gardening as their method of choice!
