What is Organic Gardening?

In an age where people are becoming more aware of their degrading environment and looking to be more eco-friendly, organic gardening just may be the answer to their problems. Not only does organic gardening protect the wildlife from harmful chemicals, but it keeps your family and pets safe as well. Organic gardening may even be more sustainable than using harsh chemicals anyhow.

Just as with any changes that you make, you are probably hesitant to switch because you do not know how, do not have the time, or simply do not know the difference. When you go to your local greenhouse in search of soil, fertilizer, or even compost, you can take the extra time to find out which ones are organic and eco-friendly and which are not. Many people do not use mulch in their flower beds; despite the finish look it presents, mulch can conserve on water, discourage weeds, and add the nutrients your flowers need. Mulch is a great organic substance that will help your budding garden.

Organic gardening is not all about buying the right materials; it is about being eco-conscious. For instance, you do not have to use harsh chemicals on your plants that have an Aphid problem; spray them down with a very diluted soap and water solution and then rinse with clear water, and your problem should be erradicated. Got a weed problem? Shoot them with some concentrated vinegar on a sunny day and you are sure to overcome them.

Compost is a great organic gardening material; replace commerical fertilizers with compost and you not only be doing a service to the environment, but you will be stimulating a healthy root development and promoting soul fertility. As inorganic fertilizers such as the commercial ones most people garden with can taint our drinking water with their toxic chemicals, compost makes sure your family has clean water to drink. Compost, among other natural fertilizers, can encourage earthworm populations. As they are great tillers and soil conditioners, you could not ask for a better organic gardening aid. They also create great fertilizer themselves.

Having a garden can be very rewarding. Not only do you have a masterpiece for everyone to see all year around, but you get a sense of pride in having created such a marvelous view. Organic gardening can combine your love of gardening with an eco-conscious mindset. It will create a garden that is both attractive to look at and safe for your family.
